During my first week at Carnegie Mellon University I was introduced to Jessica Hodgins, who will work as my mentor, and the variety of different projects that were available to me. I was presented with a list of eight different topics, which I narrowed down to four. For those four I conducted some background research, and sat in some meetings, in order to have a greater understanding of the material. After a couple more days of deliberation I finally settled on a topic of research for the summer. I will be working with Maya8.5 in particular the nCloth component, to experiment with the production of different clothes based on slight alterations in the algorithm, and applying this knowledge to assist others in using the program (a further explanation of the project can be found in the formal statement).
Also during my first week I was introduced to my work space and co-workers. I will be set up in the motion capture lab at CMU, where I will be provided with a computer that is installed with Maya 8.5. Because of my presence there I will also be expected to assist in motion capture studies when needed. At the moment I am working along side three other people in the lab. Two male post grads, who have been working with CMU for many years, and have great knowledge and experience that I hope to learn from. And a woman, just out of her second year of college at CMU, who is interning for Jessica, as an assistant to the research of the two guys.
